Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a reactive antimicrobial molecule. Its chemical balance depends on pH, while heat and light can accelerate its breakdown. Unstabilised HOCl formulations can lose strength quickly, shortening shelf life significantly and reducing effectiveness. Maintaining its strength requires careful formulation and storage.

Hydro-E combines controlled pH with an advanced stabilised formulation to maintain its specified strength for 12 months from manufacture, when stored as directed.

The molecule

The science of HOCl begins within you.

Your immune system produces a remarkable antimicrobial molecule: hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Specialised white blood cells called neutrophils use the enzyme myeloperoxidase to convert hydrogen peroxide and chloride ions into HOCl, helping destroy invading microorganisms.

The same molecule forms the foundation of Hydro-E. Its performance depends on precise formulation—including concentration, pH and stability. We apply this chemistry in carefully developed formulations for hospital-grade surface disinfection and everyday skin care, each designed for its specific purpose.

What the published research says about HOCl generally

  • Reviews describe several simultaneous modes of action: interference with DNA synthesis, oxidation of thiol-containing proteins and enzymes, disruption of cell wall formation, and reduced ATP production.
  • Because it acts on many cellular targets at once rather than a single structure, researchers have noted it is a difficult mechanism for microorganisms to adapt to.
  • Unstabilised HOCl degrades quickly. Formulation pH and stability are repeatedly identified as the factors that determine how a solution performs.

  • Our disinfectant is listed on the ARTG as a hospital grade disinfectant for hard, non-porous surfaces.
  • Our formulation holds its stated concentration for 12 months from manufacture when stored as directed.
  • Both products are alcohol-free, bleach-free and fragrance-free.
  • Hospital-grade performance. The difference is in the formulation. Some hospital-grade disinfectant concentrates are corrosive. Hydro-E’s ready-to-use, water-based HOCl formula is alcohol-free, non-flammable and not classified as hazardous under Australian GHS criteria (see SDS).

Research into hypochlorous acid as a category is not the same thing as a claim about our product. We keep the two apart on purpose.

Fact 01

The difference is in the formulation. We combine hypochlorous acid (HOCl) technology with carefully developed formulas for hospital-grade surface disinfection and everyday skin care.

Fact 02

It's why chlorinated water works. In pool water, chlorine converts to HOCl, and that form does most of the sanitising.

Fact 03

pH decides everything. Shift the pH and HOCl converts to the hypochlorite ion, which behaves very differently.

Most of it doesn't last. Unstabilised HOCl can lose much of its strength within days of being made.

Can I use the Hydro-E Disinfectant on my skin or face?

The disinfectant is labelled, tested and listed specifically as a hard surface disinfectant, so we don't recommend using it that way — it isn't sold for skin use and its directions assume a surface. The Skin Solution is the format we supply for skin, in a fine-mist bottle with directions written for it.

What's the difference between the two products?

They're sold for completely different jobs. The disinfectant is listed on the ARTG for hard, non-porous surfaces and comes in cleaning formats and bulk sizes. The Skin Solution is a cosmetic facial mist. Use each one only as its own label directs.

Can I use the disinfectant around pets?

Hydro-E Disinfectant is alcohol-free, bleach-free and fragrance-free. As with any cleaning product, allow treated surfaces to air dry before pets have contact with them, follow the label directions, and check with your vet if your pet has specific sensitivities.

Will the disinfectant work on fabric, carpet or timber?

It isn't tested or validated for soft or porous materials, and its listing covers hard, non-porous surfaces. If you want to try it on a soft surface, test an inconspicuous area first, or choose a product designed for that material.

How long does it stay effective?

Hydro-E holds its stated concentration for at least 12 months from the date of manufacture when stored as directed. Many HOCl products have a much shorter shelf life, because hypochlorous acid degrades unless the formulation is stabilised and pH controlled.

I have sensitive skin. Can I use the Skin Solution?

The Skin Solution is fragrance-free, alcohol-free and pH-balanced. As with any new product, we'd suggest patch testing on a small area first. If you have a diagnosed skin condition or you're unsure, check with your doctor or pharmacist before use.
